Senior Project Day 7

The weather today was sunny with a light breeze so it was a really nice day to work outside. In addition to some of the plant life, I learned about some of the small animals that could be found at the site. I also learned how the memorial was maintained so the park stewards really only needed to come out about once a month to the site to regulate the weeds.

Today we went to a World War II memorial site. What we had to do was take out some weeds from the site. By now, I think I have become a pro at taking out weeds. I learned about some of the weeds such as Scarlet Pimpernel, which had orange flowers, and baby rattlesnake weed, which had little flowers that looked and shook like rattles from a rattlesnake.

Senior Project Day 6 (Part 2)

It took us a little while to get to our site because we had to walk along a trail in Lands End, so by the time we got there, I was pretty exhausted. The trail, however, was really beautiful. There were so many trees and flowers so it made traveling more pleasant. Although it was tiring getting there and pulling weeds, it certainly was a good workout!

Senior Project Day 6 (Part 2)

Next, we went to Lands End. Our goal was to take out invasive grasses that had overtaken some of the land to protect the native plants. This time, we didn’t have to use to tools and we just had to pull out the grass with our hands. The native plants, which included California poppies, were really interesting and beautiful. It was much more physical work than planting at the nursery.

Senior Project Day 6

This was a much different experience than working out on the field. While it wasn’t as physically involved, it was mentally involved as the task could get a bit tedious and you always had to make sure it was planted right. I got to learn about how the nursery works. The plants were placed in a temperature controlled room where they were watered until they were ready to be transferred into a pot and later transported out.

Today we headed to a nursery for plants. Our assignment was to put plants into pots so that they could be transferred to the Marin Headlands. We first had to put some soil into the planting pots. Then, we had to take out the plants that had been grown, using a small plastic stick. Finally we had to plant the plants into the soil.
